International Veterinary Program: One Health and Rural Medic

The Global Community Health Volunteers program offers an unparalleled clinical and public health experience, designed for veterinary students and technicians at all levels. Serve in Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua, and immerse yourself in rural medicine and animal welfare in low-resource settings.

Expanding Your Practice: From Farm to Companion

This internship goes beyond the classroom, offering a holistic view of animal health that directly impacts human health and the local economy. Participants will engage in two critical areas:

Production Medicine and Sustainable Livestock (Farm Animal Health)

  • Scope: Directly visit farms and rural communities to work with farmers who rely on the health of their livestock.
  • Species: Focus on essential production animals: pigs, goats, sheep, and poultry.
  • Focus: Participate in assessments of management, nutrition, and disease prevention strategies that ensure the sustainability of production and the food security of the community.

Companion Animal Medicine and Social Awareness (Pet Care)

  • Scope: Extend care to household pets (dogs, cats, and others) within the communities, addressing critical needs in preventive health.
  • Mission: Promote awareness of respect for animal life and health, educating owners about responsible pet ownership.

Veterinary Health Campaigns and Clinical Development

Under the constant supervision and guidance of expert veterinarians specializing in rural medicine and public health, volunteers will actively participate in the complete cycle of veterinary care:

Interview and Case History

Conduct thorough owner interviews (assisted by interpreters) to obtain herd/pet history and understand the environmental factors influencing health.

Mastery of Client Communication in diverse cultural contexts and the use of basic Epidemiology.

Physical Exam and Handling

Develop and execute comprehensive physical examinations, adapting handling and restraint techniques for non-clinical settings and production species.

Refinement of diagnostic skills and practical confidence in animal handling.

Differential Diagnosis

Collaborate in formulating a differential diagnosis and developing an evidence-based treatment plan, adapted to local resource availability.

Strengthening of Clinical Reasoning and the capacity for ethical and pragmatic decision-making.

Your participation is key to advancing the 'One Health' vision, recognizing the vital connection between animal health, human health, and environmental health.
